How to Treat Fever in Kids

01

What is considered a fever?

A fever in a child is 100.4 degrees F or greater. A fever of concern for a child is 102.2 degrees F or greater

02

What do I need to do for my child’s fever?

Depending on the severity of the fever, sometimes… nothing. Allowing the body to use it’s super-fighting ability is what we were made to do. We do however, need to treat any symptoms the child may have. If your child is less than 3 months old, you need to contact your pediatrician right away.

03

What if my child has symptoms with a fever?

Any child less than 6 months of age can take tylenol and dosage is based on weight. If your child is 6 months or older he/she can take ibuprofen and/or tylenol- this is also based on weight. You can call your doctor’s office to get a correct dosage for your child.

04

What else can I do for a fever?

Hydrate! Pedialyte is a great source of electrolytes to help your child stay hydrated during a fever, and drinking fluids will also help your child battle that fever without becoming dehydrated. Avoid dairy products (milk, ice cream) during times of fever. Call your child’s pediatrician for consult to find what is causing the fever.

What not to do for a fever

Do not bundle your child up in a lot of blankets, but do not deprive them of a thin one for comfort. And do not put your child in a COLD bath.
